Panasonic HDC-SDT750 Review

Panasonic HDC-SDT750 Review

Like every other area of technology, video is developing at an increasing pace. Digital camcorders arrived on the scene around 15 years ago, high definition camcorders only around five years ago, and now video is acquiring a third dimension as well, 3D camcorders. Our first taste of consumer 3D camcorders came from an unexpected source in the shape of the Aiptek 3D i2. But now we have a higher-end, more mainstream option from Panasonic at a price: the Panasonic HDC-SDT750.

The clever tech behind the SDT750 is a bolt-on 3D attachment for the lens. This contains a pair of lenses oriented in parallel, which pick up two slightly different points of view, one for each eye which produces the 3D effect. The camcorder senses when this has been screwed on for the first time, and prompts you to follow a calibration setup. The lens cap contains an adjustment pattern on a translucent plastic panel. Three dials under a flap on the top are used for precise positioning, to optimise the best 3D image. Unfortunately, it’s recommended that you re-calibrate each time you remove and re-attach the lens, which can be somewhat irritating.

The dual images are recorded side-by-side into a single frame of AVCHD. This is one of the standard formats for 3D, and the main one currently supported by every 3D-capable HDTVs. However, you do lose half the horizontal resolution, as the video is still recorded at 1,920 x 1080 pixels, so you're effectively getting 960 x 1,080. The splitting of the frame will also have implications for low light performance in some tv's.

Using the SDT750 requires a different approach to videomaking than regular 2D shooting. Adding the 3D lens disables quite a few normal features associated with 2D Video. Most significantly, you can’t operate the zoom, and there’s also no manual focusing available, and no control over shutter or aperture. You can engage the extra level of image stabilisation available with the Hybrid OIS system. But it’s not even possible to enable scene modes or the 1080/50p recording format.

Even after exposing these minor iritations about the Panasonic HDC-SDT750 in 3D mode, there are still many of you wanting to get your hands on this latest piece of innovative technology. The Panasonic HDC-SDT750 3D Camcorder is available at Amazon.com at a discounted price as opposed to it's sister site Amazon.co.uk.

The Panason HDC-SDT750 has full HD 3MOS Camcorder with 3D Conversion Lens for 3D video recording and comes with a 3D conversion lens that records the neccessary right-eye and left-eye images simultaneously through its two lenses. The right/left images (each with 960 x 1080 pixels) that enter through the lenses are recorded using the side-by-side method. By attaching the lens, and connecting it to a TV that is capable of side-by-side method 3D playback, you can enjoy vividly colorful 3D images that can be viewed at home. You will need a TV that is capable of side-by-side method 3D playback, 3D Eyewear Glasses, and HDMI cable connection are required.

The 3MOS System has 7.59 million effective motion image pixels (2.53 megapixels x 3). This sensor separates the light received through the lens into the three primary colors -- red, green and blue, and processes each color independently, to offer images with significantly better color quality, detail and gradation than the previous 1MOS sensor system. Large-diameter F1.5 lens, 3MOS Sensor and Crystal Engine PRO have improved the efficiency of light gathering, increased sensitivity, and reduced noise to enable bright, low-noise recording in dim lighting.
1080/50p recording (Full-HD, 1920 x 1080, 50 progressive recording) conveys about twice the information of 1080i (interlace) recording to produce very high image quality. It minimizes afterimages and flickering caused by subject motion and renders crisp, detailed images. A 64-GB SDXC card can record approximately 27 hours 30 minutes of 1920 x 1080i high-definition video in HE mode, and approximately 5 hours 20 minutes of 1920 x 1080p Full-HD video in 1080/50p mode.
The Panasonic hdc-sdt750 contains HYBRID O.I.S. which is an optical/electrical image stabilization system. Further to blurring by vertical/horizontal wrist movements, it detects subtle blurring by vertical/horizontal entire arm movement and corrects them using a lens in the optical system and a sensor in electrical system. In electrical image stabilization, utilizing an unused area of the sensor when zooming, suppresses image degradation. Powerful correction realizes beautiful images even when shooting on the move or zooming. **Normal O.I.S. works when 3D conversion lens attached.
Panasonic HDC-SDT750 provides more powerful hand-shake correction with O.I.S. Lock. By pressing the O.I.S. Lock button on the LCD monitor, the blur detection sensitivity is maximized and all kinds of camera movements are detected as hand-shake and corrected. O.I.S. Lock is ideal for applications like bird watching, which call for zooming at a fixed angle. Considerable blurring occurs when panning or tilting the camera, due to the movement of the corrective lens.

So there you have it, my opinion is that the Panasic HDC-SDT750 price is reasonably justified and I will be investing in the future of Home Recording for me and my family. Home Movie nights will never be the same again.
